AFTER THE STORM

MUSINGS FROM PRASANTHI NILAYAM

by Prof. G. Venkataraman

Loving Sai Rams and greeting from Prasanthi Nilayam. I am sorry I have been off the air for sometime. Many have written to me and some have even phoned to me about this ‘silence’ of mine. While some have been gently critical, others have expressed annoyance; for a change, one listener or reader – I do not know which – admonished me in what I would say unusual language (that’s putting it politely!), telling me that I would be doing a service if I were to just shut up! Such diversity of opinions is common in the broadcasting world and does not bother me. As for my prolonged silence there are several reasons, but I shall not go into that now. Instead, let me now turn to what I wish to say now.
SAI SHINES IN US AND THROUGH US

Speech by Mr. Narendranath Reddy
on May 4, 2011 (Aradhana Mahotsavam Day) in Sai Kulwant Hall

On the morning of May 4, 2011, a special Aradhana Mahatsovam – a ceremony of Prayer beseeching Lord Sai to incarnate again was conducted in the Sai Kulwant Hall; it was the 11th day since Bhagawan Baba had shed His mortal coil. In the evening of the same day there was a special congregation of devotees again in the Sai Kulwant Hall and four distinguished elders of the Sai family addressed the gathering.

The third speaker that evening was Mr. Narendranath Reddy who was introduced to the audience by Mr. G. S. Srirangarajan. Presented below is the transcript of this talk along with the introduction.

RI SATHYA SAI CENTRAL TRUST PRESS MEET ,June 28, 2011, Prasanthi Nilayam

On the morning of June 28, 2011 the members of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust (SSSCT) interacted with the Media in the Indoor Stadium in Prasanthi Nilayam. This was the second such Press Meet after Bhagawan Baba's Maha Samadhi on April 24, 2010.

Their first press meet was held on April 28, 2011 as the members of the SSSCT had felt the need to organise such a Media Interaction session because sadly at the time there were plenty of stories floated by the Media which were imaginative untruths garnished with unsubstantiated and malicious allegations. Unfortunately the scenario remains the same even today.

In the past few weeks the Media has again circulated many a fabricated and totally baseless news items about the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, its members and its activities. To clear all this confusion the Trust addressed the Press for the second time.
THE GIFT OF DARSHAN - I

- A video presentation from Radio Sai

"After My darshan, always find a quiet corner, where you may enter into the stillness and receive the completion of My blessings. As I pass you, My energy goes from Me into you. If, immediately after darshan, you start talking, the precious energy gifted to you gets dissipated and returns to Me unused. Be assured that whatever My eyes see, becomes vitalised and transmuted. You are being changed day by day - never underestimate what is being accomplished by the act of My Darshan.

"My walking amongst you is a gift yearned for by the gods of the highest heavens; but here you are receiving this Grace without much effort. Be grateful for what you are getting. The blessings you receive would express themselves in due course, when the time comes. But also remember: To whom much is given, from him much also would be demanded!”

SOAKING IN THE SPIRIT OF THE BUDDHA

Two thousand and five hundred years ago a warrior prince turned into an ascetic and so tremendous was the power and spiritual intensity of his new personality that even now millions all over the globe find solace and peace by just remembering Him and ruminating on His teachings.

The Buddha demonstrated to mankind how even an ordinary person can unlock the power of the spirit within and reach super human heights of Love, Peace and Sublimity.

SATHYA SAI BABA – A DIVINE LEGEND,By Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

“Can there be a better role model than Baba for promoting a nationwide selfless and societal transformation mission?” asks Dr. Abdul Kalam in a thought provoking article that The Hindustan Times published on April 22, 2011.

Dr. Kalam, who has visited Puttaparthi several times, is no stranger to Baba’s Life and Mission. The article focuses on the mammoth social welfare initiatives of Bhagawan Baba. Dr. Kalam starts by stating his admiration for all the work undertaken by Baba. “I admire Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba for his selfless work and contributions to the welfare of the people by providing drinking water for the rural population, free healthcare facilities for the rural poor and free higher education.”

IT IS NOT EMPTINESS BUT A SUPER COSMIC FULLNESS

Special Musings by Prof. G. Venkataraman

This is an article that I never thought or dreamt I would ever have to write. In a sense, the events of the last one month or so have gone by like a surrealistic experience, and suddenly I feel bewildered. More explicitly I am wondering, as perhaps many readers are, whether the world as it existed before March 28 was real, or the world as it appears today without that Beautiful Form is real; the earlier experience being just a dream. Inevitably, this reminds me of a story that Swami used to narrate occasionally, back in the old days.

MOTHER TO THE AVATHAR - MOTHER TO THE WORLD

For decades now, on May 6 every year, Sai devotees across India and the world pay tribute to the Divine Mother Easwaramma. To mark this day hundreds and thousands of Balvikas students, Sai Youth and Volunteers undertake special service initiatives to reach out to the poor and distressed in every corner of the globe.

What entitled the Chosen Mother of the Lord to such acclaim and respect? Even now, almost four decades after May 6, 1972, the day she shed her mortal coil, why do thousands straddling across countries and continents out of encompassing reverence for her, dedicate a day in her memory, in sacred celebrations and service activities?

In this H2H cover story on Mother Easwaramma, we offer you glimpses of this stellar soul whose legacy and glory will inspire generations to come. It is supplemented with the reminisciences of Dr. Jayalakshmi Gopinath, a long serving devotee of Bhagawan Baba who has had the privilege of interacting and watching the Mother at close quarters for several years.

This elevating tale is a peek into the life and times of One who was chosen to bear a Son destined to be a Teacher to the World.
Loving Sai Ram and greetings from Prashanti Nilayam.

It is now the afternoon of Wednesday, April 6, 2011, and some hours since we did three things. Firstly, we broadcast the audio of the video interview we recorded with Dr. Safaya yesterday. Next, we posted the video itself, and finally, we also posted the transcript of what Dr. Safaya said in his statement.
LESSONS FROM THE DIVINE BANKER

Part-1 , By Dr. (Ms.) N. Niranjana

r. N. Niranjana is a distinguished faculty member in the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning’s all-women campus at Anantapur. Prior to joining the university’s teaching fraternity in 1975, she was a lecturer for two years at the JSS College in Nanjangud, Mysore District, Karnataka (India). Equipped with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Commerce from the Mysore University, Dr. Niranjana successfully completed her M. Phil in 1985 while simultaneously teaching at the Anantapur College, and thereafter acquired a doctorate in 1990 from the Sri Krishnadevaraya University. In 1995, she rose to the position of Reader in the Sai University’s Faculty of Commerce and is currently a Senior Fellow.

In a Radio Sai interview first aired in April 2010, she spoke of her entry into the Sai fold and the way her subjects - commerce and banking - offer lessons for life and not just for livelihood, as per the inimitable Sai Message! Not many of us know how much Bhagawan has involved Himself in grooming the staff, syllabus and the campus to ensure that the students have an exceptional experiential learning. For this reason, this conversation is highly enlightening. H2H is pleased to bring you select excerpts from that conversation.

RADIO SAI STUDY CIRCLE – PART 04

Sairam everyone. Let us start with a story narrated by Bhagawan. As all of you would know, He often narrates anecdotes that are very humorous and at the same time practical. Here, He talks of the five fingers of the hand. All of us are aware that the fingers work in unison and harmony. But Swami says one day they started fighting with each other, so much so that it resulted in a big argument. The thumb first claimed, ‘It is not possible to undertake any work without me; hence I am great’. Then the index finger smiled and said to the thumb, “Look here, oh thumb! How can you perform any task without my support? Moreover, I am used as a pointer to identify individuals. Hence, I am greater than you.” Next, the middle finger intervened and said, “There is no point in what you all say! I am the tallest among all the fingers; two of you on one side and two of you on the other are serving me as ADCs (aide-de-camp). Hence I am the greatest!”

THE COSMIC VIRTUE THAT SUSTAINS THIS UNIVERSE

This is the adapted transcript of a talk delivered by Prof. G. Venkataraman on Radio Sai in the last week of February 2011, a couple of days before Shivarathri. In this article, the author convincingly explains how the virtue of sacrifice is at play, consciously and unconsciously, at various levels in God's creation. Through the messages of Bhagavad Gita and the life and teachings of Bhagawan Baba he goes on to explain how this sacred virtue which is embedded in this universe ought to be an indelible part of our lives.

‘WHERE LOVE IS, GOD IS’

Leo Tolstoy

In a certain town, there lived a cobbler, Martin by name. He had a tiny room in a basement and through a window, all he could see was the feet of people passing by. Martin could, however, recognize everyone by their boots. There was hardly a pair in the neighborhood that had not gone through his hands, at least once or twice.

Martin had plenty to do, for he worked well, used good material, did not charge too much, and could be relied upon. He had always been a good man. However, in his old age, he began to think more about his soul and how to draw closer to God.

Not long ago his wife had died, leaving him with a three-year-old son. His other older children had all died in infancy. At first, Martin thought of sending his little son to his sister's house in the country, but then he felt sorry to part with the boy and decided to keep him.

EDUCATING YOUR HEART – 2
BY MR. B. K. MISRA

Swami says ‘Awareness is life’. The entire purpose of education is to generate this awareness in the pupils. Without it men and women become centred in themselves, and live only for themselves. Bhagawan teaches us that true realization is ‘the seeing of all in all you see’. ‘If you cannot see God in your fellowman, how can you see Him in a stone idol?’ He asks. Education is ‘expansion of love’ not its contraction. Swami has given us a new recipe of education, and has showed us how to cook it.

TWO SEAS “SEE” DIFFERENTLY

The wise know that life is not just about getting. It’s about giving. If we want to be cheerful and add lively colours to our lives, we need to be a bit like the Sea of Galilee. If we are fortunate to be blessed with either wealth, knowledge, love, respect or any other gift from God, and we don’t learn to give, we could end up like the Dead Sea – all the love, respect, knowledge, wealth, etc, could evaporate. On the other hand, however small we may be and no matter how tiny is our contribution, if we always sincerely strive to share, then we could celebrate our existence every moment just like the Sea of Galilee. And the biggest plus point, God who is ever eager to hold our hands will be smiling from above and our faces will reflect His love, His shine and His grace.

WHY WE SHOULD SPREAD THE FRAGRANCE
OF PURE LOVE?

Musings by Prof. G. Venkataraman

This is the transcript of a radio talk suitably adapted for H2H wherein Prof. Venkataraman reiterates the supreme importance of taking Bhagawan Baba’s message to the larger humanity out there which needs it the most. Citing how crime and punishment, which unfortunately receive prime space and time in all forms of media in the current times, is often terribly mismanaged and in the process often enhanced instead of being mitigated, the author goes on to pin down the exact root of this problem, and then offers solutions based on Baba’s teachings. In the end, he also urges one and all to join hands in spreading the fragrance of Divine Love.

"THE MANIFESTO" - A VISION WE WISH TO EXPLORE By Prof. G. Venkataraman

Presented below in four parts is some loud thinking on my part, to stir up some active discussion about how to take the Universal Message of Bhagavan Baba to the wide world, beyond the traditional circumference defined by Sai devotees. This is essential for several reasons, the most important of which are: a) Swami’s teachings offer the only comprehensive solution to the complex problems faced by humanity at the present time, and b) that increasingly, people on ‘periphery and beyond’ are becoming tired of solutions based on socio-economics on the one hand and technology on the other, all of which promise much but deliver little.

Musing by Prof. G. Venkataraman

When we start evaluating actions primarily on the basis of their effectiveness rather than their appropriateness, we create a culture of pragmatism that is assertive as well as bottomless.
EDUCATING YOUR HEART – 1, Get Inspired

“It is the heart that reaches out to the goal, not mind,” says Bhagawan Baba. According to Him Heart is not the seat of irrational emotions, as is commonly believed. It is the spiritual centre of an individual, which promotes intuition, and discrimination (vichara). The sense urges are purified here, and the ego, the feeling of separateness, is moulded to merge in the universality of God. The primary function of education, therefore, is educating this heart centre with compassion, or Daya, or empathy. Bhagawan says education is not confined to the four walls of a classroom, the whole universe is the classroom for a willing learner.

My journey towards Bhagavan began even as a little boy, way back in 1975. My mother was then to undergo an operation. As she was wheeled into the operation theatre, the doctor left the stretcher out for a minute to go in and check if everything was ready...

CHARMING LITTLE PRAMOD SPARKLES AGAIN!

“Every morning was agonizing. Worried of the next day we never slept peacefully any day. The tremendous pain that Pramod underwent while answering nature’s call was too much for us to endure day after day. His cries would break our heart!” said the father recalling those horrific days. As a mother, Jyothi’s ordeal was in fact most heartrending. “I do not remember sleeping or eating during that period; our attention was on him constantly. We were really tired and stressed out. The hospital in Bangalore offered to do the surgery, but we did not have that much money. We did not know where to go, what to do?”

We have also been blessed and so very fortunate, as Baba personally sat with us and asked us what we were studying and gave us support and encouragement during our difficult years. He showed us that He sits in the center of all families, if we just invite Him in. He showed us how to have a family meeting.

“We had brought a shell from a place where they inscribe any text on it on the spot. So, we had placed the words, ‘We love You, Swami!’ And as we were showing our gifts to Swami, we thought we will pray to Him to accept this gift and keep it with Him. However, what actually happened was when we showed this to Swami and made our prayer, although He did not accept it, He taught us a very sweet lesson. He said: ‘You must not write “We love You, Swami!” outside. You must write it in your heart!’”

Firstly, people repeat stotras, because that is what tradition calls for. Secondly, they believe, as in olden days, that God would be pleased by such a chant. Let me mention at this point that even it is repetitive, God does feel happy when we try do something good by way of loving Him. Thirdly, as years pass and we become mature, the stotras that once seemed repetitive, suddenly start acquiring deep meaning.

The qualities expected of a human being are called 'human values'. In My opinion, if you develop Love all the other values will follow. Love is the chief quality. Love is God, God is love. Love is life. You have Love no doubt, but it is narrow. It is limited to you and your family, only I and mine. Love is not contraction as you have now. It is expansion.
Love is selflessness, self is lovelessness.

Prof. Anil Kumar: Swami! Renunciation, we feel, is the most difficult thing. We have so many attachments and it is not easy to give them up. Kindly suggest an alternative!

Bhagavan: No, it is very easy. You are wrong if you say that detachment is difficult. In fact, it is simpler and easier to be detached than to be attached. Now, look here! I hold this handkerchief in my hand. I hold it tight in my grip. It is a strain holding it like that for a long time, i.e. holding the handkerchief in the grip. On the contrary, it is very easy to simply drop it. Is it not? So attachment is difficult while detachment is easy.

February 20, 2010 – Chinese New Year in the Holy Hamlet

The Chinese New Year (of the tiger) was celebrated in the hamlet of Highest Peace on February 20. Buddhist monks belonging to the lineage of the Tibetan high Lama who had arrived a few days earlier stayed back to bask in the Divine Presence. The drama "Unity is Divinity" was scheduled on the evening of that day. The veda chanting started as always at 8:00 a.m. and the Buddhist monks were seated in the marbled blocks, waiting for Swami. And shortly after 8:30 a.m., the beautiful orange frame of Swami glided into the Sai Kulwant Hall.

It was a day so different from all the others. Swami always takes us by surprise and many a times it takes everyone's breath away. It was 7:30 a.m. when the music and Veda chanting resounded in Prasanthi Nilayam, and people hurried towards the scantily populated Sai Kulwant Hall. As Swami had not been coming for morning darshan for many weeks, not many used to gather in the morning, one can never take things for granted with Swami.

Everyone in Puttaparthi was disturbed when Swami did not come out for darshan at all the whole of the previous day. And so on Feb 16, the hall was full till it seemed bursting at its seams. They say that the true value of something is discovered when it is missed.Every heart in the Sai Kulwant Hall seemed to be beating for Him and praying. The Veda chanting began at 4:00 p.m. and concluded at 5:00 p.m. The bhajans then began and progressed for a while. Ah! The first signs of Swami's appearance and the energy levels in the hall seemed to soar!

Shivarathri is indeed a very auspicious day. It is the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight, when the Moon is waning and the Sun is in the sign of Aquaries. The festival is, however, related to the Moon rather than the Sun. That is the reason why it is called Shivarathri (the night of Shiva). Unlike other nights, this particular night is the night of consecration, dedication and illumination.

Mystery, Beauty and Serenity….A mesmerizing glance at Sai Shiva PHOTO GALLERY

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba in a landmark discourse in 1963 revealed to the world that He is Shiva-Shakthi Swarupa, that is, the embodiment of Supreme Consciousness and Supreme Energy that pulsates in every atom of this creation. Every word and act, gesture and movement of the divine when He assumes a human frame is a mystery. Even more mind-boggling is His Silence. As they say, silence is truly ‘Sailens’ as stilling the mind and speech is the first step on the spiritual path. Once we learn to quiet the mind, we automatically turn inward. And this process becomes the easiest when the Avatar is living with us day in and day out. Here are a few glimpses of this magnificent Avatar which effortlessly transport us into a realm of inner calm, serenity, sublimity and beauty.

February 7, 2010 – Programme by Devotees from Ooty and Nilgris

The devotees from Ooty and the Nilgiris hills were in Puttaparthi in the first week of February and on February 7 Swami asked them to present their programme before Him. Bhagavan it seems has a soft corner for these village folk from the hills. Every year, they make their pilgrimage and Swami blesses them abundantly.

Their programmes might not exactly stand the critical test for theatrics and dialogues, but in the realm of devotion and feelings, they are past compare as one can gaze from Swami's response to them year after year. In 2010, they had come prepared with a full fledged drama entitled, “Satyavan-Savitri”.

Darshan is such a fantastic phenomenon. It is poorly defined in English as the "holy sighting". Darshan is a conglomeration of vibrations, feelings, power, beauty, healing and above all - Love.So many things happen even as Swami simply glides past devotees during darshan. An on-site interview panel, if set up, would generate a book easily after each darshan session, collecting the experiences and joy of the devotees present. It is His grace that we come to know of some of the things that happen and are able to partake the feast of that joy and Divine Love.

Well-known in Sai circles by only her last name, little else is known about this very private person, who prefers to stay in the background. What is her story, how did she come to Bhagavan? What motivates her to report for work with such punctuality and dedication? How does she do it day after day? Does she ever suffer from repeat action fatigue?

It is because it is Sai who has touched and transformed them, guarded and guided them, loved and continues to love them. They fly high because beneath their wings there is Sai!

January 3, 2010 – Special Blessing for Sai University Alumni

This day was the official “final” day for the alumni who had gathered at Prashanti Nilayam. Emotions had run very high the previous day evening to the extent that discipline gave front seat to pining devotion. On Jan 3rd, that seemed to have calmed a bit and though many alumni had already left Puttaparthi, quite a few were still staying on for a final darshan. It was at about 4:50 p.m. that Swami arrived for darshan. He moved through the ladies’ side and when He came in between the students, He asked for a path to be made. He cut through between the students and moved to the front. Turning then towards the Primary School block, Swami moved to the interview room. .............

Swami had answered the prayers of the alumni for a special session with Him. All the alumni had been told to assemble in the Poorna Chandra Auditorium by 3:45 p.m. that day. As a bonus surprise, Swami later sent instructions that they could bring in even their family members! So there was celebration and excitement and the auditorium was filled by 4:00 p.m. A stage had been erected for Swami and everyone awaited His arrival. Swami soon arrived and He was welcomed with Poorna Kumbham and Veda chanting.

January 1, 2010 – New Year Day in the Divine Presence

It is a day that brings new hope and vitalizes the existing one! The thrill of the unanticipated good, if we can call it so! And everyone wants to begin it on a holy and wonderful note. That ensures that the Sai Kulwant Hall in Prasanthi Nilayam is jam packed on every New Year Day. Adding to this is the fact that the alumni of the Sathya Sai University have been blessed to congregate in the Divine Presence of their Chancellor every year on this day.2010 arrived and it too joined the thousands of devotees in the Sai Kulwant Hall, waiting to see Swami. 2010 is a special year. It marks the 85th year of the Avatar's advent. The Sun also had risen early and seemed to be keen to see Him. The Veda chanting was done from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. after which the alumni began singing bhajans.

The alumni of the Sri Sathya Sai University had congregated in Prasanthi Nilayam at the lotus feet of their Divine Chancellor in the last week of December to bid farewell to 2009 and welcome 2010. Nearly 1500 alumni from various batches had gathered and Swami graciously granted them accommodation in what the students know as the "old hostel".Not only the alumni, their families too descended to the holy hamlet of Prasanthi Nilayam and the last day of the year was reserved for a drama in the Sai Kulwant Hall by the alumni. There was a black backdrop which on closer inspection turned out to be a huge LED screen. So, that was a 'moving' backdrop for the drama!

Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve that little paradise until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally under, love decided it was time to leave.

HEART 2 HEART QUIZ ON LIVING ON MORALITY

The world may say “Knowledge is Power”, “Wealth is Strength”, “Beauty is Virtue”, but Bhagavan Baba always emphasizes that Character is Power, it is the supreme virtue that each one needs to cultivate which will confer on him/her everything else. If every individual strives to cultivate a good character, there will materialize morality in society and eventually peace in the world. In H2H, it has been our constant endeavour to help in this process by sharing real life stories of people who have constantly trodden this path with confidence. All of these articles have appeared in the Harnessing the Heart section of H2H which are available in the Archives page.

The current quiz is designed to enable you to revisit some of these stories which are a constant source of inspiration and wisdom.

Captivating Charisma...Young And Youthful Sai

In 1940, India was not even independent; the best means of travel in the villages and in many cities too was the bullock cart, and the whole nation probably had a couple of telephones. But scores of people started visiting Puttaparthi which included ordinary men and women to kings and scholars from far and wide. In 1947, there was even a lady from Argentina who had recognized the Divinity of Baba and spent plenty of time in Puttaparthi! How did this happen? It was simply the mysterious Power of Divine Attraction and Love. Would it not be elevating to see glimpses of how our Sai looked then? Here are a few invaluable images.

An Awesome ‘Hand’iwork of God

The story of how Mr. Narayana Reddy, an adult breadwinner of an underprivileged family, who had almost become an invalid because of a fateful accident and the resultant terrible damage to his right hand, received virtually a new lease of life, thanks to Divine Grace and the ingenuity of the doctors at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthi gram. This tale will open your eyes to the wonders that silently unfold every single day in Baba’s Hospital, where the subtle ‘hand of God’ is always at play in so many mysterious ways.

Hallowed and Historic Sites….Which Sing the Story of Sai

For many Sai devotees, October 20 is as sacred a day as November 23, Baba’s Birthday, as it was on this day that Young Sai for the first time announced to the world “I am Sai Baba”. The venue chosen by the Avatar for this landmark declaration was Uravakonda, a small town about 120 kilometres from Puttaparthi, where Sathya had been sent to by His parents to do His schooling. However, at the age of 14, one day Sathya returned from the school very early, cast aside His books, went to the garden of the Excise Inspector of the place, Mr. Anjaneyulu, sat on a rock and for the first time sang “Manasa Bhajare Guru Charanam”. It was a momentous occasion for the entire mankind…These images attempt to take you back to those hallowed and historic sites and moments.

HARNESSING THE HEART - PART 20

Now came the challenge. How was I to say no to them? On the one hand I do not drink and on the other hand that night I was not supposed to eat as well. I also felt it inappropriate to tell them the reasons why I had to avoid eating since by then I had conversed long enough with them to realize that such an attempt would be worthless. My guess was that they would say, ‘Come on, don’t tell us you are a teetotaler’.

THE ENNOBLING PATH OF SACRIFICE - By Prof. G. Venkataraman

God does everything by setting examples. He goes through the grind. He says:
“If I can go through the grind, so can you!” Rama went to the forest to show that Ramarajya will come only when Sathya and Dharma are observed; not for any other reason. He had already been appointed Prince Regent. He could have just gone and sat there. But no! He had
to show that there is a price to pay for Ramarajya; it doesn’t come free. And God Himself
showed how that price ought to be paid.

Bhagavan then asked me to open my shirt buttons. He put His hand on my heart, rubbed His hand on my chest, and said, “Okay. Nothing will happen to you. You are My student.” And He sent me away.

THE IRRESTIBLE AND INSATIABLE EXPERIENCE . . .

How can I adequately describe what I felt in those timeless moments? If the very Deity of Sleep would have come and offered me all the wealth of heaven for a wink of repose, I would have refused without a thought. The One for whom man spends life after life in tapas (penance) was sitting close to me! The more I was afraid of touching Him, the more He rubbed Himself against me! Sometimes, in the pretext of telling something to Dr. Bhagavantam, Baba bent across me so much that my face was completely covered by His hair! And the fragrance that emanated from His being would put even rose petals to shame. To breathe in that tender fragrance was to breathe in joy.

Swami had assured them that He would visit the hospital anytime after 10:00 a.m. but needless to say, the staff was all geared up well in advance from 8:00 a.m. itself. These dedicated people are the heart of this hospital who have been a witness to many a miracle of love on a daily basis.
October 2, 2009 – Drama on Sankaracharya by Japanese Sai Youth

October 1 saw a very interesting announcement being made. The first day of a new month had a new programme in the offing. On Swami's command, Prof. Anil Kumar had announced that the evening of October 2 would witness a drama on the life of Adi Shankara.

If you are wondering what is so special about it, you must know that it was to be presented by the Sai Youth from Japan (Zone 5)! Japanese youth performing the life of India's foremost Advaithic scholar and sage - things could not have been more interesting. And so, on Gandhi Jayanthi, the birthday of the father of the Indian nation, a drama on Adi Shankaracharya, the father of one of India’s profoundest spiritual thoughts (non-dualism), had been arranged.

The penultimate day of the Yagnam was a morning of two wonderful little surprises that the Lord decided to spring upon two tiny tots from the Primary school. The day began like the past few ones with Swami taking a complete darshan round and arriving on the stage. He sat listening to the Vedas for a while and then asked all to move to the auditorium. Then, out of the blue, He called one of the Primary school children and speaking to him, materialized a gold chain for him. The child was delighted as Swami put it around his neck.

Prof. Anil Kumar in his introductory speech spoke on the glories of Mother Saraswati and then presented the four speakers of the evening to the assembly. The first speaker, Mr. Shashank Shah from the School of Business Management and Finance, spoke on the glory of the Divine Mother peppering his half an hour long speech with students' experiences of Swami. Towards the end, Swami said, "Bas" (meaning enough) and moved towards the interview room. The speaker concluded and waited till Swami arrived and apologised to Swami for having taken so much time. Swami lovingly patted him and blessing him with padanamaskar, asked for the next speaker.

September 22 marked the first day of the Veda Purusha Saptaha Jnana Yagna. The English translation for the Yagna is "sacrifice" but a Yagna means that and much more. At the physical level, it is offerings made to the sacred fire that is generated in a traditional manner. But the physical is only one of the aspects of the world around us which is influenced to a far greater extent by vibrations. We see it for ourselves in daily life. When we enter a sanctum or the place which has been witness to some great historical or spiritual event, we feel thrilled. We don't know why but we say that there is "something in the air" that seems to enthrall and envelope us.

Grama Seva – Reaching Out to the Really Needy...

This is the story of a continuous stream of selfless love and divine concern of Bhagavan Baba. Every year hundreds of students of Sri Sathya Sai University reach out to the most disadvantaged and neglected sections of population around the holy town of Puttaparthi and share the Love of Baba with them even as they offer food packets and clothes.

The entire operation is executed in scores of villages with meticulous planning over a period of ten days. Yes, the rural folk are moved to receive the gifts of Love of Baba from His students, but the party which is more touched is the students! For them it is an occasion to experience the joy of selfless giving.

The evening of September 18 saw huge carton boxes containing hampers for all those who were to engage in the Grama Seva being brought out and assembled on the marbled steps on Swami's command. Each bag contained a couple of T-shirts, a couple of towels, a pair of socks and a cap. Swami moved to the stage and asked for it to be distributed.
The morning of September 19 saw the students and staff of all the campuses of the University gather in the Sai Kulwant Hall awaiting Swami's arrival. All the villages to be served that day were less than a five minutes drive from Puttaparthi.

Taking a full round, Swami moved into the Bhajan Hall where the trio sat. He made kind enquiries and asked them as to whether they were ready. Confirming that all was set, He blessed them and moved onto the stage. As soon as He was there, He called a student who was seated below and told him to go in and call the artists. They arrived soon with offerings of roses and a card. The mikes were put in place and Swami was keen in the fine tuning of the mikes' positions. Once He was satisfied that they were fine, He sat back to enjoy the Burrakatha. ...

Completing the darshan rounds, Swami moved to the stage. The sanctum was bare and the idols were to be brought in a palanquin procession.

With Swami's permission that ceremony began. The palanquin bearers moved with the gait of an elephant as they carried the "bride" and "groom" on their shoulders.

It is important that we have a brief introduction to the person in consideration - Andal. Andal, a Tamil saint also known as the incarnation of Bhu Devi or mother earth is known all over the world for her unparalleled devotion to Lord Krishna. She is said to be always immersed in her devotional ecstasy.

A three day celebration of the consummation of Love for God by divine merger of the devotee Andal, began in Prashanti Nilayam with the inauguration of the Thirruppavai Mahotsavam. A brief introduction to the celebration is a must here. The Tiruppavai is a collection of thirty stanzas (paasuram) in Tamil written by a Brahmin saint, Andal, in praise of the God Tirumal or Vishnu. Tiruppavai belongs to the Pavai genre of songs, a uniquely Tamil tradition sung in the context of the Pavai vow observed throughout the month of Maarkazi, originally by unmarried girls praying to the Pavai goddess (related to Parvati) for a blissful married life.

The most exhilarating and edifying facet of Bhagavan Baba is His Love – a Love that is as pure, as sweet and as fulfilling as it can be. How thrilled we feel when we see the innocent and hearty smile of a little one! “This kid is God” we seem to say, overwhelmed with the sublime innocence of the tiny tot. But what if God Himself smiles like that? To see the childlike God, who literally and really is like a pure child, in the midst of His sparkling creations is a joy that will remain effervescent in the heart and mind of the beholder forever. Here are a few such elevating glimpses.

The devotees from Kerala were in large numbers to celebrate Onam with their beloved Swami on the last day of August. A three day programme schedule has been blessed by Swami and August 31 was the opening day. The Onam legend has it that the emperor Bali visits His people in Kerala and gets thrilled. But in the present scenario, there is a slight reversal!
In the meanwhile three kids in costumes came up to Swami. He was very happy and asked them about the drama. Each of them replied separately to Him, "Shankara Digvijayam." Swami's eyes seemed to light up.

Embodiments of Love,

God is one. Scholars call God by different names - Allah, Jesus, Rama, etc. Depending on one's faith, God assumes a form. Take the Christian 'I'. Cross the ‘I’, the ego and you get the Holy Cross. That is God. God has no name or form. People have had desires from ages. People have many desires. But Dharmaraja, the eldest of the Pandavas, had only 1 desire. Dharmaraja loved gambling. The Kauravas knew this and the cunning Shakuni further inspired them to utilise this as a weakness of Dharmaraja. Dharamaraja felt happy when invited for a game of dice.

The clay idol of Lord Ganesha that had become another member in the household is worshipped and immersed in a water resource. That is indicative of the reality of the human body that is composed of the five elements. "From the elements it has come and to the elements will it return." But the spirit lives on forever just as Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated year after year!
KRISHNASTAMI CELEBRATIONS IN THE DIVINE PRESENCE

The usual cow procession and Krishnashtami celebrations had been postponed for the evening. And so, when at 9:20 a.m., Swami arrived in the resplendent pitambara (yellow robe), there were gasps of joy and delight. By sheer force of habit, the sweet Lord had sacrificed yet again, and it was only to fill the devotees with the thrill of the morning darshan that He had come....

Drama by Gujarat Sai Youth

It turned out to be a different kind of session in the Mandir on August 10 - a session like which has happened very rarely before. It began at around 2:00 p.m. when the youth from Gujarat were told to be prepared with their programme in case Swami permits it at the "last" minute. Again, with the Lord, there is nothing like the "last" minute. It is always at the "right" minute irrespective of the position of that minute in time!.......At about 5:40 p.m., when bhajans were in full swing, came the message that the Gujarat youth must be ready to put up their presentation. Quickly, the marble blocks were evacuated and a backdrop was brought into position.

Soon, Swami arrived for darshan........

UK group music programme

It was a day that brought some hope and cheer and with very good reason too! The marbled blocks were occupied by devotees and youth from the United Kingdom - Sai Kingdom as they also call it and why not. Where there is Unity, there is Purity and then there is Divinity Swami says. So a truly "United" kingdom is indeed a Sai Kingdom! It brought hope in the sense that for the past 3-4 days, Swami had been arriving for darshan at around 5:30 p.m. or so. He generally sat for a few bhajans and left by 6:15p.m. To top that, morning darshans have become a rare privilege.

IN QUEST OF INFINITY – 28

To start with, we started on a grand tour of the sky, that took us all over, past stars, galaxies and what not. We then tried to learn something about what makes a star shine, that is to say where its energy comes from. Having learnt something about that, we then asked: “What happens to star when it runs out of the fuel it is burning in order to shine?” Well, it dies; but interestingly, the story does not quite end there, and that took to us to the story of the rebirth of a dead star, and it’s going through many cycles of birth and death.

But even as he climbed the edifice of fame and renown, achieving success and impressing one and all with his art, he still hadn’t achieved access to Lord Krishna!
As much as he was anxious to seek approbation from Lord Krishna Himself, who not only ruled everyone’s heart but was also the greatest connoisseur of art, success in this endeavour kept eluding him.

It was a collection of verses and songs sung by great devotees of Lord Rama. The youth had compiled them into one medley and two members came forward to offer the programme at His lotus feet.
Then the programme began at around 6:00 p.m. There was a costumed "Hanuman" who sat amidst the singing youth and it was apt that all songs were on Rama.

In Quest of Infinity – Part 27

At the end of it all, we have the following questions:

1. Are the foundations of Quantum Mechanics really telling us something about the existence of Consciousness?

2. Is quantum entanglement the same as Consciousness?

3. By the way, does the word Consciousness mean the same thing to physicists [that is to say, those who believe in Consciousness] and to scholars of Vedanta?

4. In Vedanta, the words Atma and [Pure] Consciousness are used synonymously. Is Physics indirectly telling us that the Atma is for real?

5. But then, Physics can tell us only about what is in Creation, whereas the Atma transcends Creation. So what is the connection, if any, between what physicists are talking about, and what Vedantins lecture on?

In an earlier issue of H2H, we had the story of the Sai Movement in Puerto Rico which has a history of nearly three decades even though the formal Sathya Sai Organisation of Puerto Rico came into being in 1987. And since then, this committed group of devotees has engaged in a variety of social welfare and spiritual activities, often reaching out to people outside of their borders. And in all of these sacred endeavours they have experienced the Unseen Hand of Sai. The current story is one such amazing tale.

Spiritual Questions and Answers - Part 8

QUESTION 1: What is Mama Dharma?

ANSWER: Before I get on to the actual answering, I should point out that Swami sometimes uses another phrase in place of Mama Dharma, and that is Atma Dharma. Does Krishna say anything at all about this in the Gita? Sure He does; but the phrase He uses is Swadharma. So the first thing we have to learn is the equation:

Mama Dharma = Atma dharma = Swadharma

That is to say, all these three words are completely equivalent and interchangeable. The last remark is very important; why? We must first understand that before we get on to the question proper.

Now in the context in which we are using it, the word Dharma essentially means duty. The phrase Swadharma used by Krishna in the Gita is often translated in English as ‘duty of the self’. Technically this may be correct but trouble comes when one mis-interprets the word “self”.

The Copious Stream of Pure Love

Independent India is today 62 years old. With its one billion strong population, a thriving democracy, nuclear power plants, several cosmopolitan cities and a resilient and rising economy, it is undoubtedly one of the emerging powerhouses of this world. But this is only one half of the story. The other side of the same coin is the India that lives in the thousands of its villages.

Millions of these rural folk who are untouched by the India of the 21st Century are, literally and figuratively, powerless. Their stories are pathetic and their needs, basic. The tribals living in the interior regions and forests of East Godavari district, in Andhra Pradesh, for example, did not have safe drinking water for scores of decades. But one Pure Aspiration of Bhagavan Baba, and the lives of 600000 poor and innocent villagers have metamorphosed magnificently.

How did this happen? Listen to this documentary. It is a story of Pure Love… rather, one Copious Stream of Pure Love which has drenched, delighted and elevated the lives of over half a million poor rural folk through two historic projects – the Sri Sathya Sai Drinking Water Project and the Sri Sathya Sai Village Integrated Programme, in the East and West Godavari Districts, Andhra Pradesh.

QUESTION 1: How is man a “Cosmic Creature”?

ANSWER: From that time, life is supposed to have evolved to more and more complex forms, largely as Charles Darwin first described over a hundred years ago. Today, we have a better understanding of this evolution, thanks to great strides in molecular biology and all that. The questioner is perhaps asking, “All that is fine and I am in fact aware of that. But why call man a Cosmic Creature?” I shall presume that is what the question is and proceed to answer on that basis.

Next morning Swami asked him in the mandir, “Did you join the army?” When he replied in the affirmative, He told him that he had made a big mistake by fraudulently leaving the service.

“What is point of weeping now? You have committed a major blunder right at the beginning. However, as you have made such as mistake for the first time and because you have daughters whom you must get married off and settled, I will forgive you. Go back home.
"Three Seconds Flat!"

The Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Prasanthi Nilayam is the first institution established by Bhagavan Baba way back in 1954 to come to the rescue of poor and innocent villagers of Puttaparthi, as well as the increasing number of devotees to Prasanthi Nilayam. Everything about this hospital has been a divine miracle, right from the fact that it was constructed just 6 years after Indian independence and had just two doctors and a single nurse to start with, to now, when there are over hundred beds and scores of doctors and surgeons. The greater miracle is of course the amazing healing that happens in this hospital every single day. It baffles the doctors. The patients, needless to say, have no words to express their gratitude.

One such story is of Mrs. Devika Gunasena. Her experience is simply thrilling! Watch these videos to get a summary of what happened right from the horse’s mouth. The complete account of the story follows below these video clips.

Vision and Values - Making a Difference: Whose Responsibility?

There has never been a time like the present to re-examine our lives against the backdrop of severe global uncertainty and civil unrest. In the United Kingdom, the recession is bearing a huge impact on families in every village, town, and city.

We do not know how long this will last or how critical or painful it will be. Every day the media exposes us to our inner fears and anxieties which threaten our well-being. The fundamental question that begs to be answered is: Where does our responsibility lie in building a healthy future?

The New Light in the Eyes of Little Sai

A little one was born; he was bright, bubbly and beautiful. He crawled towards his mother at her faintest call with vigour and joy. But when someone offered a colorful candy, it did not seem to interest the four-month old. Only later, the parents realised, to their horror, that their precious one, Sai, was actually blind. They were poor and clueless. But soon, thanks to grace of the Lord, they did find light at the end of the tunnel, and little Sai today, full of smiles, never fails to latch on to his mother’s saree! How did this happen? Read this ‘eye-opening’ account.

In Quest of Infinity - Part 26

When we parted company, I was telling you about how Physics is strongly suggesting that there is a subtle connectivity underlying the entire physical Universe. That also is what Vedanta says, namely that the Creator is the underpinning for the whole of Creation. Those of you who are familiar with the Gita would recall that exactly is what Krishna taught Arjuna, namely that the Atma is the underpinning for all that we see and experience in the Universe. Which is why it is often said: “For the seen, the unseen is the basis.”...

WHERE LOVE GREETS YOU AND GRACE CURES… VOL II

Like the proverbial ‘water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink’, there is amazing expertise, plethora of medicines and plenty of money, but acceptable treatment for multitudes in many countries is still a dream. In fact, many modern thinkers opine it is practically impossible. But that is probably because they are unaware or disbelieve the existence of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, in Prasanthi Nilayam and Whitefield (Bangalore). The miracle that is happening in these institutions is out of the world, but it had its genesis in a much smaller healthcare unit, just six years after the independence of India. And that is the story of the Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital.

In the October 2008 issue, we offered the first cover story on this General Hospital, in which we presented a glimpse of some of its primary departments. However, there is so much more to share, and the present story is an attempt to place before you a few more beautiful aspects of this mansion of love, which many refer to as ‘God’s Hospital’. We hope it soothes your soul, and fills your heart with peace and joy. Happy reading!

Spiritual Q & A - Part 6

QUESTION 1: How can we build up a good character?

What is character? Surely, this word ‘character’ can be described in many ways, but I shall do so by describing what one would normally expect from a person of good character. First and foremost, we would expect such a person to be honest and truthful, always be true to the given word, never indulge in deceitful practices, etc.

In general, we all have an intuitive understanding of what a person of good character is supposed to be like – no problem there. And by the way, whatever it be, good character means good character and nothing else, and its description should thus hold across the board for people of all faiths, and indeed, also for atheists.

The Inscrutible Will of the Cosmic Being - Part 1

Corporate governance invalidates today the long-prevailing conception, or rather misconception, that values and successful business do not go together. But the fact is Bhagavan gave ‘horse sense’ to the current codes of business well before they became accepted theories of conduct in business schools.

Way back in the 1980’s itself, Bhagavan gave a talk to leading industrialists in Chennai, on how businessmen should conduct themselves and the perils of business without ethics. It was one of those invaluable lessons on management. Bhagavan stressed, as He does even today, the importance of a good leader, as the core principle of management.

Enthralling Reminiscences of the Days of Yore - Part 4

At this time Baba visited Bangalore, and was staying at the residence of Mr. Shetty, an ardent devotee. When I heard this news, I went to Swami and told Him that the doctors had decided to amputate my child’s leg, and asked for His consent stating that otherwise he might turn mad or may even die. I told Him that I was being forced to take this decision.

Swami then said, “Some doctors behave very strangely; they make amputations too readily. Do not allow them to do this. I will give you vibhuti right now. Take this home and put in his mouth. That’s all - he will be cured.”

How a 'Hell of Pain' Became a 'Heaven of Love'

In February 2009, we, the Heart2Heart team, witnessed and recorded this pursuit of happiness in an unusual setting - an unattended and isolated ward of a premier hospital in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of the East Indian state of Orissa. What we saw simply left us spellbound. What was once a ‘god-forsaken’ corner has today transformed into a laboratory of pure love, where miracles happen almost on a daily basis. How did this happen? Who did it? And, finally, who is the happiest?

Read this real life story and your perspective of life may not be the same again.

How I Made My Decision-Making Easy

Each one of us has something special in our lives which we cherish. It could be a relationship, a beautiful slice of our life, a piece of timely advice, a facet of our personality, or even a value that is close to our heart.

For me, the most indelible and treasured experience has been my three years of stay in the Anantapur campus of the Sri Sathya Sai University; and for definitely good reasons. In fact, it was in those years that I learnt the true ABCD of my life – Always Be Careful of the Ds – Discipline, Discrimination, Dedication, Determination and Devotion.

Towering Sunil Walks Again... Overpowered by Love

With high fever, Sunil Verma lay almost delirious as the doctors struggled to bring down his temperature. They needed to clean the wound on his leg three times a day. Despite administering high potency antibiotics, his fever and infection refused to subside.

“We had done all that we could. When I walked out of the operation theatre, I saw Sunil’s parents in tears. A patient in his condition is facing a risk to his life. Though it was late evening, I told them to rush to Prashanti Nilayam and post a letter to Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba narrating their son’s condition,” said Dr. Kailash Rao, the Head of Orthopaedics, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram.

Taking the doctor’s advice, the parents rushed to the ashram. Sunil’s parents had not slept a wink for four days, and his mother, Eshwari’s eyes drooped on their own accord as she took an auto rickshaw along with her husband, Mr. M.P. Raju for the 5 kilometre ride to Prashanti Nilayam. In a daze, she beheld the quickly changing scenes of the harrowing ordeal of the days gone by....

Mother Supreme... Mother So Sweet, So Dear

The saddest day and the happiest day in my life fell on the same day - September 15, 1963. I was only 4 ½ years old then, and my mother had passed away that day. In the evening, as her body was being taken away for cremation, my cousin, who was slightly older than me, whispered into my ears that my mother would be taken in a procession. That somehow made me a lot happier as I imagined that it would be like the temple procession. Every image that my little mind could evoke of that religious parade was one of joy and gaiety.

Just to highlight this last point, let me start off this instalment with a brief reference to what is sometimes called Schroedinger’s cat paradox. The paradox, invented by Schroedinger himself, is a macabre gedanken [thought] experiment.

Decades of Love with the Divine Master

As for Bhagavan’s photograph printed in the magazine, the fairly large and circular tuft of hair on His head looked like an aura, all radiance. His head and His glowing face appeared to be a picture extraordinaire. “Here is a form unlike all other images of highly evolved souls I have seen before.” This was my instant response to the discourse and the photograph of Bhagavan Baba.

Not many days after this great experience, my brother-in-law brought me a chunk of Vibhuti (sacred ash), and a soiled copy of Professor Kasturi’s Sathyam Sivam Sundaram, Part I (the biography of Bhagavan Baba). The book must have acted as a messenger of God passing on from hand to hand in towns and villages.
