Indeed, many do not even know that he is a Nobelist. When he goes to conferences, he is ignored. This is most painful to him. One day he was happy but soon that happiness has been replaced with pain. If he had never been famous, he would not be facing this kind of problem. The moral of it all is that when one works for fame, etc., one must remember that it is short lived. But people do not realise that, despite numerous examples. Thus, one day when they stop being famous, these ex-celebrities who once experienced thrill and pleasure, now become sad and feel miserable. This includes sports-persons, politicians, actors, writers, and so on.

  • So, what is the lesson one is supposed to learn from all this? Suppose one works just for the sake of work and is not bothered about the outcome – this is the attitude that both Krishna and Swami want us to cultivate. In such a case, one is unaffected by both success as well as failure. And there is a greater bonus. One is liberated from worldly attachments, and this qualifies one to escape from rebirth. One is united with God forever. That is the real bonus.
