A Revolution To Reinstate The Rudiments Of Healthcare

Talk by Dr. Neelam Desai

Posted on: Dec 23, 2016

Within a few years of its construction, in the year 1994, our hospital got ranked in the Architectural Digest among the top 50 hospitals of the world. It was the first time a hospital from the developing countries was selected. The first reason cited was the philosophy of the 'holy man' (Bhagawan Baba) that healthcare and education should be free for the entire mankind. The second reason cited was that there is always a form and there is always a function and this institution was a perfect fusion of form and function that they had come across. The hospital's architecture by design embodied the symbolism and proportions of sacred traditions that are believed to engender a divine healing energy.

Come on, can I not have my freedom?
Why not? You can have your freedom, but have you defined it?

I don't care! But I do not want anyone nosing on me - I want to live according to my wish.

Sure. You can. But first enquire if living as you wish brings you freedom?

The story of the birth of Puttaparthi is no less mystifying and profound as the advent of Sathya Sai. Many years ago Puttaparthi was called Gollapalli. Gollas refer to the cowherds. So literally it referred to 'a place of cowherds'. It was a milieu similar to Gokul Brindavan of Krishna's times. These cows yielded milk in plenty and the villagers lived in bounty.

Celebrating 25 Years of Selfless Love in Action
of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Puttaparthi

The 65th Birthday of Bhagawan was a historic moment for reasons more than one. What stunned the world on the morning of November 23, 1990, was Baba's declaration: “There are many hospitals in cities, all run for profit... Few come forward to set up institutions that provide service free of charge to the poor. That is why we decided to have a hundred crore hospital right here, near Prasanthi Nilayam. Even as higher education is offered free here, likewise, 'higher medicine' also will be offered free... The hospital will be opened on and begin functioning from November 22, 1991. That is My unshakeable resolve.” That is exactly what happened and that was just the glorious start of a powerful experiment in Pure Love.

Lessons From Then And Now – Shirdi Reminiscences

Posted on: Oct 11, 2016

The Dasara festival is significant for many reasons. It is that time of the year when we worship God as the mother of all beings, showing gratitude for the 'Shaktis' bestowed on man, for the gifts of Nature's bounties, and seeking courage to battle the evil within. In Prasanthi the festival is marked by the grand Veda Purusha Saptaha Jnana Yajna, the Grama Seva and the Prasanthi Vidwan Maha Sabha. In between we also have the festival where the various vehicles blessed to carry our Lord is worshipped. In the years gone by, Swami would come around breaking coconuts before the cars, and even alight the cars and the golden chariot at times. The last day of the Navaratri, Vijayadashami, is celebrated in memory of Rama's victory over evil Ravana and also Goddess Durga's victory over the demon, Mahishasura.

We have to experience Him and enjoy. Swami has said, “If somebody gives a Mysorepak (a delicacy) in your hand, why do you waste your time trying to find out its length, breadth, weight and smell? Why don't you put it on your tongue and enjoy it? That is what the wise one would do.” So in the next few minutes, I will narrate to you the taste of this Mysorepak.

The Narayani Sena Dilemma

Me or My army?

The war between the Pandavas and Kauravas had become imminent and both sides had begun preparations. As allies were being made and battle lines drawn, both sides realised the importance of the support from the Yadavas. The Yadavas consisted of four major clans with their chieftains. They had been united under a single umbrella by Krishna as the Narayani Sena (the Narayani army, obviously named so because it is indeed Lord Narayana’s army). Duryodhana was keen to have the Yadavas fighting the war under the Kuru banner. So he decided to approach Krishna and seek His help. Much to his dismay, Arjuna from team Pandavas also comes there with the same objective.

Stepping forward, He inserted His right hand into the empty pot. In an instant, Karunyananda felt it becoming very heavy. FLYING HIGH WITH SAI - Mr. Pratim Banerjee - Part 03

Posted on: July 26, 2016

“Brindavan is special for me as it is here that I started singing. The way this happened is also quite interesting. There was a massUpanayanam ceremony being organised in the Divine Presence and everyone was sure Swami would continue to stay in Bengaluru at least till that day. But to everyone's shock, Swami suddenly left on the morning of June 1. The whole ambience turned silent and sombre. Everyone was sitting and sulking in Brindavan. Even as everybody was trying to reconcile with their cruel fate and thinking how to get Bhagawan back, there was a sudden buzz all around – ‘Swami is coming! Swami is coming!’ Yes, He went in the morning and returned in the evening! Till today I do not know the mystery behind this play of the Lord but what is fresh in my mind even now is the unfettered joy that danced on every face as Swami's car entered the Brindavan compound.

Song: man tarpat harī darśan ko āj
Posted on: July 22, 2016

The Lord was once asked, what relationship must ours be best described as? That of a Master and disciple, replied the Lord. For there is no reason or season for the bond that exists. Guru is the dispeller of darkness, the light whose radiance we seek to enlighten the path. The Guru shines forth selflessly so that we may walk our path boldly, so as to not stumble over the peaks and slip at the troughs.

Then there comes a time when the disciple turns to the Guru, and seeks the Guru Himself. The seeking has to be earnest, the restlessness of yearning irrepressible. It is only then that the effulgence of His grace turns to reveal His own truth; the truth that the Guru without was a mere reflection of the Guru within. The Truth that Guru is Hari, and Hari alone is the Guru.

The Story Of How Swami Karunyananda - Part 02
Posted on: July 18, 2016

He was born as Venkatasubbiah at 4:30 am on 10th October 1894 in Athimanjeripeta (in current day Tiruttani taluk of Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu) to parents Subbulakshmamma and Venkatappa Naidu. Subbulakshmamma was a doting mother who instilled love and forbearance in the lad as we read in the first part. However, when Venkatasubbiah was about seven years old, his mother passed away. Unable to tend for the little child amidst his travelling and work, the father gave him into the care of the Karnam (Government clerk during the British times) of Pennalurpeta, Venkatarayudu. This Venkatarayudu and his wife treated the boy more like a slave than a son. Thus, he had to do all the household chores even though he was barely a 10 year old. But the little lad did not wince even a bit.

He remembered his mother’s words in those trying situations.

FLYING HIGH WITH SAI - Mr. Pratim Banerjee - Part 02

Posted on: July 15, 2016

“I remember during my first dining session, I squatted on the floor and there was this boy who went around with a bucket saying ‘Rasam... rasam...’ Coming from a Bengali background, I thought he was serving rasogulla (the popular Bengali sweet dish). So I extended my glass to him. The boy quickly understood that I was a fresher and said, ‘No brother, rasam is meant to be eaten with rice’. I meekly said, ‘Okay, thank you.’ Like this, slowly I adapted to this new way of life.

“When I think about it now, making so many adjustments in my life should have been tough, especially because I was coming from an upscale school. But it was not that difficult for me as it was a choice that I had made. So I was willing to walk that extra mile. Swami definitely was working within me. How else can I explain this? Also there were excellent sport facilities and so much music around – there was not a spare second or a dull moment.”

FLYING HIGH WITH SAI - Mr. Pratim Banerjee - Part 01

Despite his roots in West Bengal as his surname so evidently suggests, Pratim did his early schooling in The Scindia School, Gwalior, in Madhya Pradesh. “I had a great time there. It is one of the finest boarding schools in India, in the same league as Doon School, Dehradun or Mayo College, Ajmer. However after being there for seven years, right from my III grade, I wanted a change. My grandmother often mentioned how students in Puttaparthi ‘shine with a glow’ and are impressively disciplined.”

Pratim's grandmother is the legendary danseuse Mrs. Amala Shankar. She is the wife of Pandit Uday Shankar who was conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award, by the Government of India way back in 1971. His contribution to modern dance in India is legendary.

The Story Of How Swami Karunyananda - Part 01

Posted on: July 8, 2016

Baba was travelling from Puttaparthi to the city of Rajahmundry, often considered as the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. The citizens of the city gathered in thousands in the Municipality Museum Hall where Baba was scheduled to address everyone. In the crowd was also a 64-year old gentleman who was highly revered in Rajahmundry for his philanthropy and social service.  He had come along with his mentor and Guruji, Sri Malayala Swami. It would be only the second time that he was seeing Swami in his hometown.

There were bhajans for an hour before Baba rose to speak. Baba’s discourse in the hall that day was as simple as it was profound. It simultaneously moved and inspired the gentleman just as it did the crowd which had gathered. Baba simply called upon everyone to cultivate uprightness and equanimity and take repose in Namasmarana (the remembrance of the Divine Name). The meeting concluded and everyone was leaving. The gentleman rose with his Guru and moved towards the exit when, suddenly, he heard his name being called.

In 1976, at the end of the Summer Course in Indian Culture and Spirituality in Ooty, Swami gave a discourse describing His entire life. He declared, “All through My life, youth will follow Me, this will happen in larger and larger numbers.” He then created a medallion and said,“Look! In My palm is the destiny of this country, India.” It was a medallion with the map of India, and a few verses engraved on it. He said,“There are verses on this medallion which describe glorious events and social works that I will undertake and the names of the students who will head the 18 centres which will come all over India.” So Bhagawan is indeed the Bharat Bhagya Vidhata and in His hands lie, the safety and destiny of our nation, nay the destiny of the entire world.

She was fondly referred to as Jayamma by Bhagawan, and Jayamma madam by her thousands of students. She came to Swami in 1947, when in her early teens. Her father Sri Vittal Rao was one of the early devotees who later was instrumental in the building of the Prasanthi Nilayam mandir.

Sathya Sai Baba On The Sthula (Gross), Sukshma (Subtle) And Karana (Causal) Worlds - part 04

By Christan Mackenzie Gold Coast, Australia

Posted on: May 20, 2016

What about an Avatar, an incarnation of the Divine? Is this subject to the rules and laws of incarnation applicable to man? Sai Baba says there are important differences.

The Avatar (Divine Incarnation) is the Atma-Shakti (power of the Supreme Soul) that has put on the raiment of Kriya-Shakti andYoga-Shakti (power of action and power of divine communion).

What’s The Use Of Mere Life?

C. Rommel, Indian Foreign Service (Retd.)

Posted on: May 17, 2016

Often I questioned myself – what's the use of mere living? What is the use of a life without meaningful seva or for that matter a conceited, but prosperous life that is not of any use to others? Wasting precious life by being engulfed by the maya, whereby focusing only on personal needs or being engaged in social activities that are filled with ego. These were my troubling thoughts when I was eighteen, while, unfortunately, entrenched in the deadly trap of ill-gotten habits of liquor consumption, chain-smoking, gambling, chewing tobacco pan, et al- a perfect example of spoiled brat, with no direction in life.

Sathya Sai Baba On The Sthula (Gross), Sukshma (Subtle) And Karana (Causal) Worlds - part 03

By Christan Mackenzie Gold Coast, Australia

Posted on: May 14, 2016

We need to distinguish the uniquely individual and private experience of sukshma-sarira from the visions or apparitions of God which may rarely occur for some people in the waking state. Baba says categorically that in all cases such experiences are generated by man’s own mind. When they are not mere hallucinations, waking visions and manifestations of forms of God, arise from within man’s heart. Man, through his intense focus or devotion, may bring about the conditions for God to appear in the objective world.

The Mother Lives On...

Posted on: May 05, 2016

“To me, the power of Mother Easwaramma is not a concept, or an idea or a belief, it is an experience. In fact an experience as intense, powerful and real as it can be,” says Aravind Sai, an alumnus of Baba's university who has had the opportunity of singing the glory of the Mother of the Divine in the immediate physical presence of The Son at least six times. Aravind Sai, along with Prabhakar and Raghuram, form the Burrakatha trio who have had the chance to perform any number of times in Bhagawan's presence, especially in the last five years of Swami's earthly sojourn.

Sathya Sai Baba On The Sthula (Gross), Sukshma (Subtle) And Karana (Causal) Worlds - part 02

By Christan Mackenzie Gold Coast, Australia

Posted on: May 05, 2016

Bhagawan teaches that our goal as man is to remember the Source, to resonate with Love, Om, Brahman - and thus, we need to ‘lighten up’, and become more in tune with the subtle, so eventually we can merge back with the Source. Merging with God, the ultimate goal of man, is about returning to That from which we came, That which has no form and which is beyond all bodies and attributes, Atma Itself. Through spiritual exercise and practice, we progress from the physical to the subtle realms before moving beyond those sequentially. Sai Baba describes this as a process of peeling off the kosas or the body sheaths.

Sathya Sai Baba On The Sthula (Gross), Sukshma (Subtle) And Karana (Causal) Worlds - part 01

By Christan Mackenzie Gold Coast, Australia

Posted on: May 02, 2016

Before creation of the ‘three worlds’, nothing existed in the universe. In the beginning, the sun, the moon, the stars, the earth, the sky, etc., did not exist. There was only pitch darkness all around. The combination of atoms resulted in the formation of hard matter of a very high density. As a result, a lot of heat was generated. Then all of a sudden, the hard matter exploded with a big bang into pieces and spread all over...

Life With God Is An Endless Hope:
Life Without God Is A Hopeless End

The Life Experience Of Mr. Hari Hara Krishnan Part 4

Posted on: Apr 28, 2016

The day Iraq invaded Kuwait also happened to be a day of great tragedy for the Shia Muslims around the globe. It was the day of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram when they mourn the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE). Naturally, Karbala is the heart of this mourning and the ‘celebration’ of this event goes on almost for the whole month of Muharram (the first month of the Islamic calendar).

The Life Experience Of Mr. Hari Hara Krishnan Part 3

Posted on: Apr 23, 2016

Hari and Ribhi Al Shaer had a detailed conversation on the getaway plan the next day. A rendezvous point was fixed and, from there on, Ribhi would guide the convoy of four cars towards the planned destination - Amman. The first car would naturally be the Mercedes Benz belonging to Ribhi. Hari with his cousin’s family would follow at a distance of hundred metres. The third car would be of Kirit Gandhi and family following Hari’s car at a distance of hundred metres. The final car would be housing Salim and his two friends. Ribhi said that he would not be able to wait at the rendezvous point since any waiting car could be checked (best case scenario), confiscated (normal case scenario) or bombarded (worst case scenario). The time of rendezvous was fixed for 9 August, 8:30 am. Since anything could happen along the journey, it was agreed that each ‘car’ could decide to break the convoy and head in the direction of its choice at any time during the journey.

The Life Experience Of Mr. Hari Hara Krishnan Part 2

Posted on: Apr 15, 2016

Hari was woken up by an alien alarm in the unearthly hours of the morning - gunshots and explosions! He glanced at the wall clock and saw that it was about 2:30. He moved to the window of his second storey home. What he saw filled him with instant dread. The streets were having traffic even at that early hour. But the vehicles plying were battle tanks instead of the usual cars. Frenzied youngsters wielding machine guns were shouting slogans and wreaking havoc to whatever they could see. There was random firing going on and it appeared like a scene out of a violent videogame. The only difference was that death here was real with no restart button available!

VIVEK: That is a very good question. Science is absolutely right in asserting that the electron has a dual nature and can manifest either as a particle or reveal only its wave aspect, depending upon circumstances of course. However, you would also recall from your college course on Quantum Mechanics that the electron is able to have this dual option shall I say, because it is in the very nature of the quantum electromagnetic field that is the source of the electron.

In an ancient Hindu temple, a number of pigeons were living for quite some time on top of the gopuram (the monumental tower at the entrance of any temple). This wasn't such an uncommon occurrence as pigeons generally prefer elevated or high structures.

But the pigeons were forced to relocate when the management decided to renovate the temple and perform the Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony).

In January 2016 on Radio Sai we started an audio series “Saints – the Soul of India”. The first episode was on Saint Andal, the transcript of which was published. Later we had another episode on Saint Andal's immortal work Tiruppavai, followed by Saint Tyagaraja's masterpiece musical composition - The Pancharatnas. The fourth episode which was played as part of Thursday Live programme on March 3, 2016 was on Saint Manikkavasagar. This discussion is actually in four parts. However a major portion of the first part was a deliberation on Shivaratri and the Shiva Principle. Presented below are the highlights of this conversation between Radio Sai's Bishu Prusty (BP) and a Radio Sai volunteer Mrs. Lalitha Shekhar (LS).

Satsang with a Techie - 07

That really is the key question, is it not? By the way, soon after the War, many physicists who earlier worked on the famous Manhattan Project in America where the first atom bomb was developed felt a deep moral objection to nuclear weapons and quit weapons work, even though there were plenty of job opportunities. They all went back to universities to become teachers and professors. Moreover, Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell led a strong global anti-nuclear weapons movement in the fifties till they passed away. So, it was not as if all scientists got seduced shall I say, by the glamour of developing “bigger and better weapons”.

To resolve this conflict, the family decided that we would seek Swami’s advice. We started for Prasanthi Nilayam. No sooner did we land there, Swami called us for an interview. Once we were inside, even before we could say anything, He looked at my mother and said,“Bhaskar is not meant for studying medicine. He has a weak heart. But, don’t worry about him. I will give him admission in my college and keep him near Me.” My heart leapt in joy and gratitude. What could be a greater fortune than to live with my Dear Lord!

You see Varun, when modern day scientists consider evolution they focus on only two aspects of it. On the one hand there are the astronomers, the astro-physicists, the elementary particle physicists and of course the cosmologists, for whom evolution means the full story of the Creation and the development of the Physical Universe, from the Big Bang, right up to what the Universe is today.
